Convened Session  Ask the Climatologists: Reflecting on Historic, Recent, and Future Heavy Rain Events

Greg Carbone — CISA; University of South Carolina
Panel Discussion

[Continuation of Session 1E]

This session will explore historic and projected climate change in the southeastern United States with a focus on tropical storms and precipitation extremes. One presentation will focus on inter-annual and inter-decadal trends in hurricanes, the underlying mechanisms behind these trends, and the influence of hurricanes on heavy rain and flooding in the Southeast. A second presentation will review rainfall amounts associated with Hurricane Florence. A third presentation will explore how rainfall dynamics have changed during the instrumental record, and how shifts in rainfall intensity have implications for surface water quality management and the value of long-term gage records. To connect this work with the generation of surface water pollution we will discuss the dependency of peak flow rates, soil erosion, and impervious surface washoff on rainfall intensity via standard empirical approaches. A fourth presentation will examine the widely varying projections of future precipitation, the methods associated with its generation, and the challenges to its application.

Chip Konrad, Corey Davis, and Joel Nipper will present during the first hour of the session (2:45 - 3:45). Greg Carbone will speak for the first 20 minutes of the second hour (4:00 - 5:00). The final 40 minutes of the session will be used for Q&A and a panel discussion.
